good bones get a much needed refreshThe main thing I wanted to achieve with the master bedroom was creating some balance. The room has a large window to one side with a small additional window on the back wall right beside it, directly across from the large window we were adding a much bigger wall of wardrobes. This meant the bed was off centre and everything felt just a little off balance. Colour blocking the wall and wrapping it up onto the ceiling (which took a little while to get across the line with my clients) was a great solution to anchor the space. Adding hanging pendants either side of the bed then reinforced the intentionality of this design choice ensuring the bed is the focal point right when you walk in and everything else comes to your eye later.
Working on a home right from the outset aka layout design, is always my favourite. It means I’m with them for the whole renovation journey start to finish and can ensure that the practical aspects of the design are considered as well as the aesthetics. For these clients one aspect that was important to them was having a guest room as they have family come and stay often. However having one room that stays empty most of the time seems like a waste of valuable space. One of my favourite things is creating multipurpose rooms for flexibile living. Having the guest room right off the main living (there is also access from the hallway) means this often empty guest room can be used as a play space/media room as their kids get older. Using acoustic panelling on the wall not only hides this secret door but gives extra noise protection, a real win win. Opening spaces right up for modern family living is great but having doors you can close off for competing noise from adults and kids, especially when entertaining, should not be undervalued.
These clients run their own business from their home so having a dedicated office space was a must. We played around with various options during the planning stages but using this dining nook off the kitchen worked perfectly to create a small space just for them to work from. Having two dedicated dining zones didn’t make sense so it was the perfect solution and ensured a seamless flow on to the living room with dining off to the side.
Collaboration notes must go to the awesome builders at LC Building and Elite Kitchens for bringing my vision to life.
