family kitchen comes to lifeWorking on this home right from the layout design of this poorly planned space was such a dream. One of the first things I knew needed to change was the placement of the existing back door which the family used into the kitchen space. This was an automatic dumping ground for coats, bags, shoes, the works. By using an existing window in the laundry we were able to reshuffle the back of the home to create a new entrance and boot room for them to come in through. This allowed me to completely reorient the kitchen, creating a large functional space for family life. The old layout had so much dead space that wasn’t used and didn’t allow for easy movement around the kitchen, you couldn’t even open the fridge if someone was standing talking to the person cooking! Moving the kitchen back under the beautiful windows ensured we made the most of what really is a big room that was just poorly designed.
As big entertainers we also wanted to open the very tight dining space up to create flow between the cooking and eating zones. By opening up this load bearing wall as much as we could we were able to create a space that not only feels huge in comparison to how it was before but also ensures they’re able to have conversations across spaces and live flexibly day to day with the kids but also when family and friends come over.
A huge shoutout to Rob at Kitchen Inn whose attention to detail is second to none and brought our vision to life. Always a pleasure to collaborate with this fab team!
Also to the awesome builder BJ from BDW Collective who did an awesome job on this old gal! Old homes are never an easy reno, from wonky walls to replacing architectural details but BJ made it look easy.
