lofty ambitions…

Small spaces have their own unique challenges, this loft has very low ceilings so I need to make sure the room feels larger than it is. One way to do this is by keeping the walls and ceiling light and white. Having the same colour running up the walls and above instantly makes the ceiling feel higher than it is. The other design choice which helps this is having low furniture. The retro aesthetic is a great choice for a small space as mid century furniture typically has shorter legs and is all about clean, unfussy, minimalism. Both sets of chairs are vintage finds which were reupholstered by an amazing local business ‘Upholstery Boutique’.

Because this office is situated above the workshop of a building company I didn’t want the space to feel feminine. Choosing black accents contrasts with the white walls and blonde timber floors, adds a hint of masculinity without being overwhelming and ties in with the joinery. It also adds a modern touch to the retro vibe ensuring we’re giving a nod to times past without falling into a time warp.

Choosing art can often be the starting point for a design. However in this case it was the icing on the cake. I wanted something that fit the retro vibe I was going for and also tied the mustard of the chairs into the other side of the room. These vintage prints from Nest Wraps fit the bill perfectly.
